Description

This a first light image taken with my new-ish Askar FRA300 Pro which is a 60mm f/5 quintuplet Petzval design. This scope has a nice wide field to showcase larger diameter DSOs. This image was captured with my seldom-used ASI 2600MC OSC camera with a filter drawer and Askar’s 6nm Ha-OIII and SII-OIII duo-narrowband 2-inch filters which worked quite well.  The SII-OIII filter did a great job of adding additional OIII data.  See revisions for specific filter basic stretch. The RGB was captured with an Optolong L-Pro 2-inch filter.  Overall, I really like this setup as it has opened up quite a few additional large targets.

IC 1396 is an ionized gas region located in Cepheus and is about 2400 light years away. The Elephant's Trunk Nebula within IC 1396 is a star forming region containing several young stars discovered in 2003 that are estimated to be less than 100000 years old. The entire IC 1396 region is ionized by the massive star HD 206267.  A couple of planetary nebula are shown - on the lower left is Sharpless 128 (Abell 77) and on the right is PK100-04.1.  Also on the right side of the nebula is Mu Cepheid - a red supergiant, also known as Herschel’s Garnet Star, is one of the largest known stars with a radius of 1200-1600 times that of the Sun.
